Stonewall Gardens, Palm Springs’ first senior assisted living village for the LGBT community and friends, will host a community Open House on the 47th anniversary of the Stonewall Inn uprising, on Tuesday, June 28, at 2 p.m.
Palm Springs Mayor Robert Moon will be the event’s featured speaker and will discuss the impact of the rebellion and riots, which took place on June 28, 1969 at the Stonewall Inn in New York’s Greenwich Village. He will also trace the evolution of LGBT rights in the military to the present. In addition, Richard Pass will relay his first-hand experience as he witnessed the rebellion and riots. The melee is widely considered to be the single most important event leading to the gay liberation movement and the modern fight for LGBT rights in the United States. Audience members will also be encouraged to share their own personal reminiscences.
Mayor Robert Moon has been a resident of Palm Springs since 2001. He served as an officer in the United States Navy for 22 years, retiring with the rank of Commander. During those 22 years of commissioned service he spent 14+ years at sea, including multiple tours in the Middle East, Persian Gulf, and Mediterranean, as well as most of the Atlantic and Pacific regions. He also worked for a year as a financial analyst at the White House during the first Reagan administration on the staff of the President’s Private Sector Survey on Cost Control, also known as The Grace Commission. He served on the Palm Springs Measure J Commission from its inception in 2012 until 2015, the first two years as Chairman. In 2015, he was elected Mayor of the City of Palm Springs.
A native of England who grew up under the cloud of World War II, Richard Pass has lived in Buenos Aires, London, and eventually New York in the late 1960s, where he worked at the British Embassy. He was at the Stonewall Inn on the night of the uprising and was a witness to the momentous event.
