I was terribly disappointed last Saturday night. I had been here 3 years ago when it was a bar that was crowded, friendly and fun. The evening was early (about 9:30pm), it wasn't busy and there was nobody waiting at the bar. I went up with my three friends to the grey haired bartender, who I discovered later was probably a manger. After taking my order he shouted, "Just one drink?". I couldn't hear him because of the volume, so asked him to repeat what he said. Rolling his eyes, he yelled the same question. Unsure of what he meant, I queried him. He responded, "Is that all?". Obviously I was with three other people, so I stated that the others wanted a drink too. One friend said he wanted a beer. He responded with, "What sort of beer, we have 40.". Before giving more detail about what was available, he walked off to make my drink, while the others floundered trying to see what was on tap and what might be in the fridge. He continued to be unhelpful, coming back and listing a few of the beers, then repeating, "We have 40 beers, what do you want?". After finally getting our drinks, we sat outside, because the music was too loud to hold a conversation inside. The smell of cigarette and cannabis smoke was pervasive. Overall it was a very unsatisfactory experience, particularly for two of my friends for whom it was their first time in Palm Springs. After I had talked up how great I had found this bar in the past, I was embarrassed at our experience this time. Needless to say we didn't stay for another drink. I am disgusted by the unnecessary rudeness this bartender displayed to us. The friendly atmosphere has been lost and I will not be returning to this establishment. There are plenty of other choices in Palm Springs. Do yourself a favour and go elsewhere.
Mixed bag, but at least it's fairly consistent
I go to Hunter's every time I'm in PS, which is at least twice a year. Nothing really changes for the better or worse, the bartenders are dinosaurs for the most part, most have been there since the place opened and while they give decent service it would be nice to have a pretty young face to look at now and then. The dancers are straight boys that really don't know what they are doing as far as trying to entertain. The one big thing I've noticed over the years is that drink prices have climbed a lot, $9 for a call drink and $5 domestic beers make them the highest price of the gay joints in the area. The crowd is mixed from young to old, friendly enough and there were a ton of young women their on Saturday night (not necessarily a good thing for me).
The savanna very dry this year...try again in wet season?
Hunters video bar has 11 video screens and a rectangular bar with hi-top tables and barstools. There is a patio out front with tables and chairs. I was there with my cousin on 7/23/14--I could have hooked up with a couple of old queens otherwise. :-) There was only one go-go boy, James, but he was cute and friendly with a nice body. Not many people were in there despite there being an underwear contest with 6 competitors. I guess that was 'cause it was a Wed. and had been a very hot day. Thus, I gave them an extra star for the benefit of the doubt. Drinks were not expensive--I paid $6 for a rum and coke--and the staff was quite friendly. I would probably go back, just not on a hot weekday.
Great Happy Hours. Dance floor.
Typical gay video bar/club
It's the happening place in Palm Springs; consistently busy with good bartenders and the hot young out-of-town crowd on weekends. The music sucks, but the drinks are good and the crowd is chill. It's also close to most of the other gay bars in town, so you don't have to drive at all.
A fun place to be!
What's good about this place is there is no snobbery! There's a good mix of all ages and people are ready to chat - sometimes including their life stories! The bar staff are cute and helpful and the atmosphere is very good, especially at the weekends!
best gay bar in the desert
This bar is the first gay bar i went in 13 years ago-loved it then-love it now-I have been in all the others in the desert area as well as out of town and i find this to be an amazing bar. All ages, great dance music, dancing on the weekends, many video screens and friendly bartenders not too mention the amazing staff-----------------luv ya mary
Most popular, for better or worse
In any city, the dance club that has been most consistently popular for the longest time will undoubtedly have its share of critics, and usually will have earned at least some of that criticism. Hunters has managed to avoid most of the undesirable cliches, despite having long been the place that fills to the brim on Fridays, Saturdays, and any type of event weekend from Pride to Dinah Shore. Even on slow nights, there are bound to be more people here than most other bars, although the wide open space on the dance floor and adjacent area can be depressingly dull when it's empty. Late at night, don't be surprised to stand in a long line while those smoking on the front patio finish their cocktail to re-join the sweaty mass inside. Not as diverse as Toucan's, but a larger dance area and much later festivities (not to mention closer to downtown Palm Springs).
